Three materials competed in the early prototypes: frosted borosilicate, plaster-of-paris composite, and hand-poured alabaster glass. The alabaster variant — semi-translucent, naturally veined, slightly warm in tone — answered the brief on every measure.
The making
Each globe is mouth-blown by a team of four glassblowers in a small workshop in southern Spain. No two are precisely identical; slight variations in wall thickness and translucency are characteristics of the process, not defects. The brass hardware is machined from solid stock, then hand-buffed to a living finish that develops character with age.
What the process costs
The mouth-blown process takes roughly four times longer than machine-pressed glass production. We absorb that cost because it’s the only method that achieves the specific translucency and surface quality the design depends on. Mass production would make the object cheaper and, in every way that matters, worse.
